GENERAL POLICE RECORDS INFORMATION
Each
state has a central repository of police records. The
state repositories include information on people who
have been put through the state’s criminal justice
system. But the repository does not include information
on crimes someone may have committed in another state.
Otherwise, the police records found in the state
repository are fairly accurate, having been compiled
from a variety of sources, including local county,
parish and municipal courts, as well as from law
enforcement agencies.
Police records can provide you with an abundance of
information. Police record searches assist you in
locating police reports on any individual in any city,
town or county in the US. Additionally, you can
even access information on vehicular accidents by
getting the police report filed for the accident. You
can search police records by date of birth, first and
last name or address.
Extensive information is recorded in a police record or
report that includes traffic accidents, fraud, domestic
violence, theft, stalkings, burglaries, assaults,
arrests and more. Specific police record Information
often varies by state, county and city within a
particular state.

INDIVIDUAL STATE RESTRICTIONS ON POLICE RECORDS
Different states release the police record information
in different ways. On one end you have an example of the
state of Florida, which allows releasing all the state
criminal records openly and without any restriction. On
the other end you have Tennessee, which allows only
authorized and restricted access to criminal history
information. In between, you have states that allow
releasing police records to the public without or with
some level of restrictions. The types of restrictions
vary and include such restrictions as the requirement to
provide a signed release form or a requirement to
provide a person’s fingerprints. There are other types
of restrictions that vary from one state to another and
that may limit the ability to access the state’s
criminal records database.
Although police records are accessible to and by the
public, there are restrictions in the use of the
information contained in them. It is illegal to use the
information in any unlawful way. Additionally, the
information may only be used for lawful and necessary
purposes. Any private citizen can take out a police
record check on any other citizen, but the primary users
of police records checks are employers.
