BACKGROUND CHECKING TO PREVENT WORKPLACE THEFT
Retailers lose over 13 billion dollars annually to
workplace theft. For this reason, many of these
retailers are finding that conducting a criminal
background check on all current and potential employees
is becoming a must.
Retailers must consider what they pay in time, money
and effort to hire and train an employee. When you add
it all up, the national average is well over $3,000 per
employee.
Add to that cost an unscrupulous criminal posing as
an employee and you've got quite a large figure of money
lost.
Most of these workplace thefts are conducted by
employees with previous criminal records. As a matter of
fact, an astonishing 58% have a previous criminal
background. that means for the small price of $25 or
less many of these employers could have prevented their
losses. All they had to do was
conduct a criminal
history report or background check on their applicants
and employees.
By using a background check screening process
employers can:
- Prevent throwing money away on training criminals
- Prevent inventory from being stolen
- Prevent workplace violence
- Create a positive work environment
There are two types of criminal background checks
available to retailers. They are:
- Instant criminal background checks
- County criminal background checks
BACKGROUND CHECK DATA COLLECTION PROCESSES
Instant background check searches come from databases
collected directly by data vendors from the federal,
state and local levels. the records they collect are
then put into a database and made available to
corporations and private individuals.
One drawback of these instant criminal databases is
that not all records may be covered. This is normally
due to the fact that not all counties within states have
their information in a digital format that can be
collected.
The other option is a county criminal search. These
searches are done usually by data brokerages that will
send a researcher out to a county courthouse on behalf
of their client to search the county courthouse records
for offenses.
While county searches can be considered more accurate
than a criminal database search, the drawback is that
they only cover a single county.
